Dam and Reservoir Engineering
Dams and reservoirs are built essentially for harnessing the surface water resources, so that water could be conserved for various utilisations like irrigation, hydropower, water supply etc. The storage of flood waters also results in flood moderation thus reducing the flood fury. WAPCOS has a wide range of experience in dams and reservoir engineering particularly monsoon originated floods accentuation with perennial flows covering hill and plain topography. A large number of concrete, masonry (gravity and arch) and earth-cum-rockfill dams have been designed by WAPCOS engineers and are now effectively operational in India and abroad.

Safety of existing dams particularly the old dams is receiving focussed attention worldwide considering ageing of dams and the standards and criterion required to be adopted under the state-of-art technology.

A number of important steps in regard to procedures and rules for dam safety assurance have been devised. WAPCOS and its constituent organisation Central Water Commission alongwith various State agencies have evolved guidelines, standards and norms for carrying out inspection, investigation, hydrological studies, structural analysis including effect of seismicity, for safety of the dam structure and evolving appropriate remedial measures.

WAPCOS has also been providing consultancy services for dam safety review and appropriate rehabilitation measures for projects in India and other developing countries.
